By Aimee Orta, Owner and Craniosacral Therapist
In 2003, there were around 100,000 Craniosacral therapists in the world. That number has continued to grow exponentially...and for a good reason. When done well, it is effective. A study published in the May 2016 Clinical Journal of Pain found that Craniosacral Therapy "patients reported significant and clinically relevant effects on pain intensity". I find this to be true every day in my treatment room.
Of the people I meet, however, only about 3 out of 10 have heard of or received Craniosacral Therapy. And those 3 people describe it as either "energy work" or "voodoo". While I can't deny there is "energy" involved, that would also describe massage, acupuncture and, well, any interaction between two humans.
People give Craniosacral Therapy a generic description because it is hard to explain. Without the right words to comprehend it, it sounds like witchcraft. This perception may be robbing you of the opportunity to receive a treatment that could significantly improve your physical pain, anxiety, injury recovery and long term health.
It’s a difficult therapy to explain because there are so many components to Craniosacral work. I have found that it’s not necessary for someone to understand the therapy in its entirety though. Instead, in my treatments, I describe one piece that is relevant to the issue we are addressing.
So, here are my 6 most common explanations of Craniosacral work. Maybe one (or all) will apply to you:
Now that you are a Craniosacral expert what should you do?
If you could benefit from pain or anxiety relief OR wonder what your body has to say, schedule an appointment today. I'm not the only Craniosacral therapist at Balance Healing Center. I studied alongside Clare and Sharon who both practice Craniosacral techniques in very different ways. Clare offers a full Craniosacral treatment as well as Craniosacral Massage which combines massage and Craniosacral techniques. Sharon integrates Craniosacral into her HeartMind Wisdom treatments for added support in her mind-body approach. You can always call me at (773) 774-5610 to find out which is the best practitioner for you.
Do you know of anyone with migraines, constant overwhelm, in a recent car accident, or sport concussion? Forward this link to share your new-found knowledge. Don't let them miss out on the opportunity for immediate relief and long term prevention of future pain. Use one or more of these explanations or, if all else fails, just tell them: “Craniosacral treatment is some crazy voodoo that really works. Trust me. Here is a $10 gift card for new clients. Try it.”
For the first 10 years of my massage career, I was an aggressive, deep tissue therapist. I dug into my clients’ tissues until they cried "uncle" in order to release their physical issues. It left me exhausted and drained by the end of each day. And I’d still return to the same problem during their next appointment. Needing a way to save my body from long term wear and tear and better help my clients, I ventured into Craniosacral Therapy. What I learned changed how I do massage and how I work with clients off the table. Here’s the big news flash; it’s your issue, not mine. Your central nervous system has to release the tissue, not me. It is my job to help you feel what is causing the issue and teach you how to release it. Sometimes this is physical. Sometimes it is mental or emotional. I don't decide. I simply translate what your body is saying. When you participate in a release on this level, your awareness increases. Your ability to release on your own improves and your body heals. You learn how to prevent the issue from happening again, making life less of a struggle. Wouldn’t that be nice? It is - just ask my clients.
